Thompson performed a lively, country-inspired rendition of the R&B star’s hit single “Stay” and instantly captivated the judges and everyone in the house.
Although the judges had a few notes.
“There’s a magic going on in your voice,” Luke Bryan told him. “I’d like to spend 10 minutes with you, from the top of the song to the end where you have the magic to make a really subtle melody.”
After that minor criticism, the judges announced Thompson’s fate.
“Unfortunately, this is the end of the road … for a lot of people here tonight except you,” Brian said, letting him know he was in the top 24.

“It’s crazy!” Said Thompson stunned.
“So call your girlfriend, tell your little one when you’re home that Dad is in the top 24,” Brian told her.
“I’ve always been a guy who doesn’t believe in himself, but I’m trying to work on it to overcome my fears,” Thompson told his family before calling to share the news. “One day, I hope as a father, it will be something that my little boy can be proud of. It’s the best day of my life, besides the birth of my child, it’s the best day of my life.”
