Cliff Shearer is battling breast cancer. The 40-year-old “Get Organized with the Home Edit” star shared her diagnosis on Instagram on Wednesday and revealed that she was having a double mastectomy.
“I have breast cancer,” Shearer captioned a photo of herself wearing a dress from Vanderbilt Breast Center in Nashville. “It’s hard to say, but it’s easier said than done. I’m having a double mastectomy tomorrow (prayer is welcome!), And I wanted to say a few words before I did. “
Shearer went on to share how he supported himself after discovering a flaw in his breast.
“In the last week of February, I found a fault in myself. I’ve been trying to build an app with my OB for months, and even when I told them I found a fault, they couldn’t get me right, “he wrote.” I received a mammogram request from my general doctor. Had to be done, which led to an ultrasound and then an emergency triple biopsy. “
Shearer eventually learns that he has “two tumors, 1 centimeter each, which is aggressive and fast-moving”, but he “caught it early.”
“If I hadn’t taken it upon myself, I would be in a completely different situation now,” he wrote.
In the end, Shearer decided to share her diagnosis publicly in order to “make cancer feel purposeful.”
“If I could persuade one of you to have regular self-examinations, to always be a self-advocate and to prioritize your health over your busy schedule – it would mean something,” he wrote. “It’s important to remember that I was under 40 when these tumors formed and I have no family history of breast cancer. Even if cancer seems impossible, it is still possible. “
Although Shearer initially had “why my feelings” after his diagnosis, he eventually began to “really think, why not me ?!”
“I have all the support, resources and a platform to help other people through it,” he wrote. “So if someone has to have breast cancer, I will gladly let it happen to me. Thank you for being on this ride. I love our community, and you mean more to me than you know. ♥ o xo, Clea “.
